The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
