A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
