Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
