The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
