Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
