Top Television Selections: Seven Essential Films This Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the demanding standards for female beauty along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. Demi Moore presents a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to hosting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside due to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone named Sue, leading to a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit mystery stars the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a break from reporting on world issues to board an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, and other filthy rich passengers. However when an enigmatic female disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director tests his creative boundaries in this clever ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the camera – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and the entity appears protective of her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's locked-room horror stands strong without requiring a sequel. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the youth anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears the worst. However, the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top true story of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple commence profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as precise like the turtlenecks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to discover a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. The two stars are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
