Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to question certain calls from the official, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
